India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got off to a promising start but failed to convert it into a substantial score on Day 1 of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh. The left-handed batter fell to a soft dismissal, giving the visitors an early breakthrough after India elected to bat first. Jaiswal’s wicket came on the final delivery of the 12th over.

Afghanistan pacer Mohammad Saleem Safi delivered a short-of-a-length ball down the leg side at 132.9 kph. Looking to glance it fine, Jaiswal could only manage a faint edge behind the stumps. Wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai made no mistake, completing a straightforward catch to end the opener’s stay at the crease.

The 23-year-old scored 24 runs from 32 deliveries, striking five boundaries during his brief innings. His dismissal brought an end to a 41-run opening partnership and left India at 41/1.

Earlier, India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first on a surface expected to slow down as the match progresses. Afghanistan’s bowlers responded with discipline, maintaining tight lines and creating pressure on both Indian openers. Jaiswal was fortunate to survive an early chance after being dropped on 11, while KL Rahul also enjoyed a slice of luck during the morning session.

In the 11th over, Ziaur Rahman Sharifi induced an outside edge from Rahul with a length delivery outside off stump. Although there was a clear sound as the ball passed the bat, Afghanistan opted against taking a review. Replays later confirmed an edge through UltraEdge, allowing Rahul to continue on 16.

Following Jaiswal’s dismissal, Sai Sudharsan arrived at the crease at No. 3 as India looked to rebuild. Afghanistan continued to impress with their disciplined bowling effort and sharp fielding.

At the time of writing, India had progressed to 96/1 after 25 overs, with KL Rahul settled at the crease and Sai Sudharsan beginning to find his rhythm. The Mullanpur Test marks only the second red-ball meeting between India and Afghanistan, with India having won the inaugural encounter in Bengaluru in 2018 by an innings and 262 runs.
