India chief selector Ajit Agarkar has finally addressed one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket — the omission of Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. Speaking after the BCCI announced the squads for both the T20I series and the 2026 Asian Games, Agarkar described the decision as a difficult but necessary one as the selectors begin planning for the next major cycle.

Suryakumar, who captained India to a successful T20 World Cup title defence earlier this year, has been left out despite his leadership success. According to Agarkar, the selectors considered both recent performances and long-term planning before making the call. “With regards to SKY, it was a tough one. Partly his own form and also looking at the next two-year cycle, we thought this was the best way forward,” Ajita Agarkar told reporters in Mumbai.
The decision signals a clear shift in focus towards building a squad for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to return. As part of that transition, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed India’s new T20I captain.

Agarkar explained that Iyer’s leadership credentials and consistent performances made him the standout choice for the role. Over the last few years, Iyer has built an impressive captaincy record in franchise cricket, leading teams to major finals and an IPL title while maintaining strong batting returns.

“With regards to Shreyas, we’ve seen what he has done over the last few years. He led a team to a title, his performances have been excellent, and he was close to making the World Cup squad. For us, he was the standout candidate,” Ajita Agarkar said.
While Suryakumar’s recent form played a role in the decision, his contribution to Indian cricket remains significant. The 35-year-old has scored 3,272 runs in 113 T20I appearances at a remarkable strike rate of 162.94, including four centuries and 25 half-centuries. His exclusion marks the beginning of a new era, but his impact on India’s T20 success story remains unquestionable.
