India A’s opening match of the tri-nation ODI series against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla produced a bizarre moment that left Priyansh Arya frustrated after an unfortunate run-out ended what was shaping into a promising innings. The incident took place in the 13th over when Arya and Ruturaj Gaikwad became involved in a mix-up while attempting a second run.

Gaikwad initially pushed for the extra run and sprinted towards the striker’s end, but Arya was reluctant from the start. By the time both batters realized the confusion, they found themselves stranded at the same end, handing Sri Lanka A a golden opportunity for a run-out.

The decision was referred to the third umpire to determine which batter had made his ground first. Replays confirmed that Gaikwad had crossed the crease before Arya, meaning the latter was adjudged out.

However, the replay also revealed a stroke of bad luck that contributed to Arya’s dismissal. As the left-handed batter stretched desperately to make his ground, the bat he was dragging behind appeared to get caught underneath the shoe of Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella. The brief obstruction prevented the bat from sliding smoothly over the crease and may have cost Arya valuable fractions of a second.

The unfortunate dismissal ended an encouraging knock of 32 from 32 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and a six. Having looked comfortable at the crease, Arya appeared well set for a bigger score before the unusual incident cut short his innings.

Earlier in the day, much of the attention was focused on teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made his much-anticipated India A debut. Fresh from a stunning IPL 2026 campaign, the young opener arrived in Dambulla carrying significant expectations.

Sooryavanshi made an immediate impact by dispatching the very first ball he faced for four, showcasing the fearless approach that made him one of the biggest stories of the IPL season. He added two more boundaries during his brief stay at the crease but was unable to convert his start into a substantial innings.

The 15-year-old eventually departed for 14 off 12 deliveries, while fellow opener Prabhsimran Singh also struggled, managing just two runs. Despite the early setbacks, Arya’s fluent innings and Gaikwad’s presence at the crease helped India A rebuild. With captain Tilak Varma, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge and several other talented batters still to come, India A remained well placed to post a competitive total in the tri-series opener.
