Rohit Sharma’s presence at India’s training session in Mohali on Wednesday brought an end to doubts surrounding his availability for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. The Indian captain, who was initially included in the squad subject to fitness clearance, received the final approval from the BCCI Centre of Excellence and is now set to feature in the three-match series, which begins in Dharamsala on Saturday.

As India’s players gathered for a light training session, there was no shortage of storylines. Newly-appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer attracted attention, while rising stars such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey continued their preparations for the challenges ahead. Yet, as has often been the case throughout his career, it was Rohit Sharma who became the centre of attention the moment he stepped onto the field.
The veteran opener began his session away from the nets, spending a few minutes in discussion with strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux. From there, Rohit eased into a series of shuttle runs designed to test his movement and overall fitness. Accompanied by wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, he completed multiple sets without showing any signs of discomfort, a positive indication for both the team management and fans eager to see him back in action.

However, the biggest test awaited once Rohit picked up the bat. For nearly an hour, the 39-year-old alternated between facing the fast bowlers and the spinners, with coaches, teammates and observers closely monitoring every aspect of his preparation.
The session began on a challenging note. Nitish Kumar Reddy produced an in-swinging delivery that trapped Rohit leg-before wicket, highlighting some understandable rustiness. There were several cautious leaves outside off stump, tentative defensive pushes and a handful of deliveries that beat the bat as Rohit focused more on rebuilding rhythm than dominating the bowlers.

Gradually, though, the trademark timing started to return. His defensive strokes became more assured, and the ball began meeting the middle of the bat with greater consistency. Rohit offered glimpses of his class when he effortlessly flicked Arshdeep Singh over deep mid-wicket and neatly guided a wide yorker from Prince Yadav to the boundary.
Not everything came together perfectly. A short-pitched delivery from Gurnoor Brar resulted in a mistimed pull shot, while a few balls still found enough movement to beat the outside edge. Yet the overall improvement was clear as the session progressed.

By the time Rohit shifted to the spin nets, he appeared significantly more comfortable. Facing an off-spinner, he unleashed a series of trademark straight sixes, reminding everyone why he remains one of the most feared batters in world cricket. While one training session cannot fully measure match readiness, Mohali provided a reassuring sign that Rohit Sharma is steadily finding his rhythm ahead of India’s ODI series against Afghanistan.
