South Africa Test captain Temba Bavuma has openly admitted that he feels envious when watching other leading cricket nations play lengthy Test series, as the Proteas continue to receive limited opportunities in the longest format. Despite being the reigning World Test Championship (WTC) winners, South Africa have played only four Test matches in the current WTC cycle so far, significantly fewer than several of their rivals. The disparity becomes even more striking when compared to Australia.

The current WTC table-toppers have already featured in eight Test matches during the ongoing cycle, double the number played by South Africa. For Bavuma, the imbalance is frustrating, especially given his team’s recent success and their status as one of the strongest Test sides in world cricket. The South African skipper believes teams such as South Africa and India should be involved in longer Test series more often, not only for the players but also for the benefit of cricket fans worldwide.

According to Bavuma, there is something special about watching two elite teams battle over multiple matches, where momentum can swing dramatically, and storylines evolve throughout a series. Speaking about the issue, Bavuma admitted that watching major Test contests like the Ashes leaves South Africa wanting more opportunities in the format.

“We woke up this morning to watch the Ashes,” Temba Bavuma said. “We watched with a bit of jealousy, knowing that they were playing five Tests. They’ll be going at each other. Look, however the series goes, 1-1, 2-0, it would be nice for a three-Test series against a formidable team like the India national cricket team.”

The Proteas captain emphasised that Test cricket remains the ultimate examination of skill, temperament and endurance. Unlike shorter formats, where matches can be decided within a few hours, Test cricket unfolds over five days and gives both teams opportunities to fight their way back into the contest.

Bavuma believes fans deserve more of these high-quality battles between top-ranked nations. “And it’s just good for the fans, really, when people get to see good cricket,” he added. “One team dominating, another team dominating. But there is also an opportunity for one team to come out as victors.”

South Africa’s Test calendar will become considerably busier later this year, with several crucial assignments that could shape the WTC standings. The Proteas are scheduled to face Australia in a highly anticipated three-match Test series in October before taking on Bangladesh in a two-match series in November. They will then conclude the year with two one-off Tests against England.

Currently, South Africa sit second in the World Test Championship standings with 36 points and a points percentage of 75.00 after four matches. The Proteas remain unbeaten, having recorded three victories and one draw. Australia lead the table with 84 points and a points percentage of 87.50, having won seven of their eight Tests while drawing the other. As the defending WTC champions continue their pursuit of another final appearance, Bavuma’s comments highlight a growing desire within South African cricket for more frequent and longer Test series against the world’s best teams.
