Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-awaited India debut could face an unexpected delay, with growing unrest in Belfast casting uncertainty over India’s upcoming T20I series against Ireland later this month. The 15-year-old batting prodigy, who earned his maiden senior India call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, was widely expected to make his international debut during the two-match T20I series in Belfast.

There is a big unrest going on in Ireland

However, recent developments in Northern Ireland have raised concerns about whether the fixtures will go ahead as scheduled. The uncertainty stems from violent disturbances that erupted across Belfast earlier this week following a knife attack that left 40-year-old Stephen Ogilvie with life-changing injuries, including the loss of an eye.

Authorities have charged a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker with attempted murder, triggering a wave of protests that quickly escalated into disorder. According to reports, several vehicles were set ablaze, barricades were erected in parts of the city and properties linked to migrant families were targeted.

The unrest has resulted in more than 16 arrests, while at least 12 police officers were injured during consecutive nights of violence. With the situation continuing to evolve, Cricket Ireland has confirmed that it is closely monitoring developments before taking any decisions regarding domestic and international cricket events.

“Cricket Ireland is continuing to monitor the situation in areas currently experiencing community unrest and will make a decision within the next 48 hours regarding this Sunday’s Irish Senior Cup and National Cup fixtures,” the board said in a statement. “We remain in close consultation with the relevant authorities and our provincial unions. The safety and security of players, coaches, match officials, and supporters is paramount in our deliberations. Further updates will be provided as they become available.”

The statement came shortly after Cricket Ireland cancelled the Inter-Provincial T20 Festival in Lisburn due to safety concerns. The governing body has also indicated that a decision on this weekend’s Irish Senior Cup and National Cup matches will be announced soon.

India are scheduled to play Ireland in two T20 Internationals on June 26 and June 28 at Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast, leaving limited time for authorities and cricket administrators to assess the situation.

The series has generated significant interest, not only because of Sooryavanshi’s potential debut but also because of the start of Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as India’s T20I captain. With less than two weeks remaining before the opening match, fans and officials alike will be hoping for a swift resolution that allows the series to proceed safely and as planned.
