Kane Williamson’s surprise decision to retire from international cricket has brought the curtain down on one of the finest careers in New Zealand cricket history. The former Black Caps captain announced his retirement amid the ongoing Test series against England, ending a remarkable 16-year journey at the highest level of the game.

Widely regarded as one of the modern era’s greatest batters, Williamson leaves international cricket as New Zealand’s all-time leading run-scorer. Across 378 matches in all formats, he amassed 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries. In Test cricket alone, the elegant right-hander scored 9,515 runs, cementing his place among the game’s all-time greats.
Williamson made his international debut in 2010 and quickly established himself as the cornerstone of New Zealand’s batting lineup. Although he stepped away from T20 Internationals in late 2025, few expected the 35-year-old to retire completely from international cricket during the England Test series.
His final appearance for New Zealand came in the opening Test at Lord’s, where he managed scores of 0 and 18 as the Black Caps suffered a 115-run defeat. With the second Test set to begin next week, New Zealand now face the challenge of moving forward without one of the most influential players in their history.

Beyond his batting achievements, Williamson earned universal respect for his calm leadership and sportsmanship. He captained New Zealand across all formats between 2016 and 2024, overseeing the most successful period in the nation’s cricketing history. Under his leadership, the Black Caps reached two ICC Cricket World Cup finals, three ICC tournament semi-finals, and famously lifted the inaugural ICC World Test Championship title in 2021 after defeating India in the final.
His retirement also marks a significant moment for world cricket. Williamson becomes the first member of the celebrated “Fab Four” — alongside Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Steve Smith — to retire completely from international cricket. While Kohli has already stepped away from Tests and T20Is, Williamson is the first of the quartet to bring his international career to a full close.

As tributes continue to pour in from fans, former teammates, and cricket legends across the globe, Williamson leaves behind a legacy built on consistency, humility, leadership, and excellence. New Zealand cricket may eventually find another great batter, but replacing a player of Williamson’s stature and character will be an enormous challenge.
From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years but more than that I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond. I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you…

It’s gonna take a while to accept I won’t see Kane Williamson bat in a Test again. Even watching him bat for hours in the nets was always soothingly hypnotic. Williamson running the ball late past the slips to the deep third boundary is a tableau of understated, exquisite beauty.

This is so typical of Kane Williamson. Just a quiet exit away from the spotlight. One of the finest players of his era, arguably the best batter to emerge from NZ and an outstanding person. Humble, dignified and universally respected. pic.twitter.com/z1L27Atlmk

This is so very Kane Williamson.
He was under 500 runs of getting to 10,000 runs in test cricket.
Even if he didn’t get to that landmark he could have easily played the next game as a farewell game. His place in the team isn’t even challenged.
No he didn’t. He Just walked…
