Bangladesh spinner Nayeem Hasan has found himself at the centre of a disturbing controversy after allegedly being assaulted by police officers in Chattogram on June 12. The incident reportedly took place shortly after the cricketer returned from Dhaka, where he had featured in a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match earlier that day.

According to reports, Nayeem was travelling home in an autorickshaw when police officers stopped the vehicle near the Lalkhan Bazar area. The Bangladesh international later alleged that the officers behaved aggressively from the outset and offered no explanation for their actions. Nayeem claimed that he was grabbed by the throat and forcibly moved into another autorickshaw, with the apparent intention of taking him to a local police station.
The situation quickly attracted public attention, with several bystanders reportedly informing the officers that Nayeem was a national cricketer who had represented Bangladesh at the highest level. However, according to the spinner, those interventions had little impact on the officers’ conduct.

Speaking about the incident, Nayeem alleged that he repeatedly identified himself but was ignored. He further claimed that he was beaten with sticks and plastic pipes before eventually being taken into custody. The cricketer also questioned why he was transported in a civilian vehicle rather than an official police vehicle if the operation was legitimate. “I repeatedly told them who I was, but they refused to listen. I want a fair investigation and justice over the entire incident,” Nayeem stated.

Following the allegations, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured that a formal investigation would be conducted. He admitted that preliminary findings suggested proper procedures may not have been followed and promised action against anyone found responsible. Nayeem was released in the early hours of June 13 after spending several hours in custody.
The incident has triggered strong reactions across Bangladesh’s cricketing community. Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim publicly condemned the alleged assault, calling it “unacceptable” and demanding a transparent investigation. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also expressed deep concern, urging authorities to carry out a thorough and impartial inquiry.
