India debutant Gurnoor Brar enjoyed a dream start to his international career by striking in his very first over during the opening ODI against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on June 13. The young pacer wasted little time in making an impression, providing India with an early breakthrough in the rain-shortened contest.

The wicket came on the fifth ball of Brar’s opening over. Bowling a probing length delivery that moved away slightly off the pitch, the right-arm seamer tempted Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran into a drive. However, Zadran failed to control the shot and only managed a leading edge, which flew comfortably towards mid-off. India captain Shubman Gill completed a simple catch to hand Brar his maiden international wicket.
It was a disappointing outing for Zadran, one of Afghanistan’s most reliable batters in the format. The opener managed just one run from four deliveries before departing, leaving the visitors at 13/1 in the second over.

Earlier, Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first after persistent rain reduced the match to 25 overs per side. The game also marked the ODI debuts of Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey, as India continued to test their bench strength ahead of future international assignments.

Afghanistan began aggressively despite the early setback. Rahmanullah Gurbaz took the attack to India’s bowlers from the outset, smashing a boundary and a six off the first over bowled by Arshdeep Singh. However, India quickly regained control through their pace attack.

After Brar dismissed Zadran, Arshdeep struck in the following over to remove Sediqullah Atal for a duck, further denting Afghanistan’s start. At the time of writing, Afghanistan were struggling at 17/2 after three overs, with Gurbaz leading the resistance on 14 not out and Rahmat Shah unbeaten on one. Brar’s early success will undoubtedly boost his confidence as he looks to establish himself at the international level and make the most of his opportunity in Indian colours.
