Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin slammed the lack of basics and common sense during the unfortunate mix-up between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in the first ODI against Afghanistan. The openers had a huge moment of confusion during the second innings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, resulting in a run-out as well. During the sixth over of the run chase, Rohit Sharma went for a single after tapping the ball towards mid-on.

Shubman Gill, at the nonstriker’s end, was not ready initially after watching the ball, and being blocked by the bowler Allah Ghazanfar on his follow-through. By the time Rohit Sharma was sent back, it was late. Although Rohit put in a dive, he was nowhere close to the crease and had to depart for a run-a-ball 16.

“I had seen that run-out live on broadcast, and I don’t know when the audiences will realise that when you play in front of the wicket, whenever there is such a case, it is the call of the striker that the non-striker needs to uphold. It is really easy to debate. Gill denied the run, and this is also not the first run out between him and Rohit Sharma,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“If the striker says yes to a run, there is no scene of saying no. All of these basics of running between the wickets, they teach all of this in childhood. All of these are basic things. Everyone makes mistakes, I am not saying it is the mistake of one or the other here, but the truth here is, Rohit was not at fault at all,” he concluded.

However, Shubman Gill smashed an unbeaten match-winning fifty to see India through with more than two overs to spare.
