Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to command attention after his explosive rise in IPL 2026. The 15-year-old became the youngest Orange Cap winner in the tournament’s history, and his breakthrough performances were strong enough to force the Indian selectors to include him in the squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

Sooryavanshi has not yet made his international debut, but his rapid rise has already made him one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the game. That growing reputation was on full display in Dambulla on Monday, when Sri Lanka’s first ODI captain Anura Tennekoon waited close to an hour to meet the India A batter after the Tri-Nation Series clash against Sri Lanka A.

The 79-year-old former captain, who has been closely following Sooryavanshi’s progress, described him as a “generational talent” and offered the youngster some valuable advice. Sooryavanshi greeted Tennekoon respectfully by touching his feet before listening to the veteran’s words.

“Focus on your game and cut out the outside noise,” Anura Tennekoon told him. “Today, unfortunately, you couldn’t get going. But that is part of cricket. You cannot make an impact every single day.”

The timing of the conversation was especially significant after the tense finish to the match, which ended in controversy and a Super Over defeat for India A. Sooryavanshi had also been involved in a post-match altercation after allegedly being sledged while walking off the field, an incident that added to the drama in Dambulla.

Tennekoon, however, chose to focus on the teenager’s talent rather than the heated ending. He said he was impressed by Sooryavanshi’s clean hitting and fearless strokeplay, particularly the ease with which he clears the boundary.

“I was really impressed by his batting in the IPL,” Anura Tennekoon said. “Hitting those sixes and fours the way he does is something unbelievable. I hope he continues in this way.”

The exchange highlighted the massive excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi, whose power, temperament and early success have already made him one of India’s most promising batting prospects.
