Nathan Smith and Melie Kerr are both making headlines in England this month, each carrying major responsibilities for New Zealand on separate fronts. Smith produced the standout bowling performance of the first Test against England, ripping through the hosts with a brilliant six-wicket haul at Lord’s and earning his place on the famous Honours Board. Kerr, meanwhile, is captaining the White Ferns at the Women’s T20 World Cup, where New Zealand are defending their title on the global stage.

After completing a training session at The Oval on Saturday, Smith made a quick trip to Southampton to watch New Zealand’s heartbreaking loss to the West Indies. Kerr had already attended the first Test at Lord’s and is expected back in London for the opening day of the second Test on Wednesday after leading her side against Sri Lanka on Tuesday afternoon.
For the couple, it has been a demanding but memorable month, with both balancing international duty and trying to be present for each other whenever possible. Nathan Smith described the moment as one to be handled with perspective rather than pressure.

“You’re just taking it in your stride at the moment. Once you’re in it, you’re not trying to make it something bigger than it is: she’s been to a handful of World Cups, and I’ve played a bit of international cricket now. You’re just bringing it back to a day-by-day, game-by-game sort of thing. But yeah, it is a massive time in our lives,” Nathan Smith told ESPNcricinfo.

The pair first met while playing for Wellington during the 2021-22 season and have now been together for around four and a half years. Since then, both have risen quickly in their respective careers. Kerr has become one of the world’s premier spin-bowling all-rounders, while Nathan Smith has developed into a dependable seam-bowling all-rounder for New Zealand’s men’s team.
Smith also opened up on the realities of being in a relationship with another elite cricketer, explaining that the biggest challenge is finding enough time together.

“Normally, one of us is at home and one of us is away. Most of the time, if I leave, she’ll be at the Big Bash or something, so I’ll go try to spend some time with her there. I’ve spent a couple of Hundred seasons with her over the last couple of years,” he said. “Your time together is never normally at home. It’s a bit different for us. Time off is just wherever — hotel rooms, normally. But it’s all good. It’s nice to be in the same time zone, at least,” he added.
