Sri Lanka Cricket has taken strong disciplinary action after the heated on-field altercation involving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the Sri Lanka A vs India A match in Dambulla on Monday, June 15. The incident, which quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, has now led to sanctions from match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash, according to a Cricbuzz report.

Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage is understood to be at the centre of the punishment, while wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella has also been fined. Dickwella, who reportedly tried to defuse the situation between Halambage and Sooryavanshi, has been penalised for a separate breach unrelated to the altercation. However, the exact nature of that offence has not yet been revealed.

There is still some uncertainty over whether Sooryavanshi has also been sanctioned for his role in the exchange. The 15-year-old India A batter was visibly involved in the tense moment after Sri Lanka A edged past India A in a Super Over finish, turning an already intense contest into a post-match flashpoint.

For Sooryavanshi, the ongoing Tri-Nation A Series has not gone quite as planned. After a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, expectations were high that the teenage opener would continue his rich form in Sri Lanka. Instead, his output has been modest so far. He has gotten off to starts in all three innings, but has not been able to convert them into a substantial score.

Sooryavanshi has scored 79 runs in three innings, a return that falls short of his explosive reputation. His best effort came against Afghanistan A, when he smashed 44 off 22 balls with nine boundaries, falling just six runs short of a well-deserved half-century.

While the numbers do not fully reflect his potential, Sooryavanshi has still shown glimpses of his aggressive batting style. The challenge now will be to turn those starts into bigger, match-defining contributions as the tri-series continues.
