Rohit Sharma brought up a major personal milestone in style during the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow on Wednesday, June 17. The India opener smashed two consecutive pull shots for sixes and, in the process, crossed 14,000 List A runs, once again underlining his class and power at the top of the order.

The landmark came off Mohammad Saleem Safi in the fourth over. Safi tried to surprise Rohit with a short-of-a-length delivery just outside off stump, but the veteran batter was quick to read the length and pulled it over midwicket for a towering six. The Afghan pacer went short again on the next ball, and Rohit responded in identical fashion, dispatching it over deep backward square leg to complete back-to-back maximums.

Before this match, Rohit had featured in 356 List A games and scored 13,990 runs at an average of 46.78, including 37 centuries and 74 fifties. His latest effort pushed him past another notable career landmark in the 50-over format.

India, however, did not begin their innings smoothly. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early for four off nine balls, but Rohit immediately counterattacked with his trademark aggression. Shubman Gill then joined the charge, hitting three boundaries off Allah Ghazanfar in the next over to keep the pressure on Afghanistan.

The Indian captain and his opening partner built a strong platform, helping India race to 80 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. At the time of writing, India were 186 for 2 after 27 overs, with Ishan Kishan unbeaten on 45 off 48 balls and Gill on 87 off 66 deliveries.

India will be aiming to seal the three-match ODI series after winning the first game in Dharamsala by seven wickets in a 25-over contest. Shubman Gill led that chase with an unbeaten 84 off 66 balls, and another victory in Lucknow would hand the Men in Blue an unassailable 2-0 lead.
