Rishabh Pant could be set for a dramatic return to Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027, with reports suggesting that discussions between the franchise and the wicketkeeper-batter have gathered momentum following his disappointing stint with Lucknow Super Giants. While negotiations are still ongoing and the structure of any potential deal remains under discussion, a reunion with his former franchise is emerging as a strong possibility.

For Pant, a move back to the Delhi Capitals would represent a return to the team where he established himself as one of India’s most exciting batting talents. Between 2016 and 2024, the left-hander played 111 matches for the franchise, scoring 3,284 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.93. During that period, he evolved from a fearless young prospect into one of the most destructive wicketkeeper-batters in world cricket, using his IPL success as a launchpad to cement his place in the Indian team.

Pant also led Delhi Capitals during the latter stages of his first spell with the franchise. Therefore, his departure ahead of the IPL 2025 season came as a major surprise. Many believed the decision was influenced by the shift in operational control within the franchise, as the GMR Group took charge from JSW Group for a two-year cycle that concluded in 2026.

At the time, Pant’s move appeared to be a landmark moment in IPL history. Lucknow Super Giants secured his services for a record-breaking ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive player ever purchased in the league. LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka publicly expressed his faith in Pant, predicting that the wicketkeeper would become one of the defining figures of the IPL for years to come.

“According to me, he will play for the next 12-15 years. People say that MI and CSK are more successful. Mahi and Rohit are undeniably brilliant. Mark my words, after 10 years, people will say, Mahi, Rohit and Rishabh,” Sanjiv Goenka said on Star Sports.

“In my belief, time will prove that he is not only the most successful player of the IPL, but he is going to be the best player of the IPL. I haven’t seen players with that kind of passion and hunger to win,” he added.

However, Pant’s two-year spell with Lucknow never lived up to expectations. He managed 581 runs across two seasons at a strike rate of 135.75, while the franchise finished seventh and tenth, respectively. Following a difficult campaign, Pant stepped down from the captaincy, and reports now suggest that a return to the Delhi Capitals could offer him the fresh start he needs ahead of IPL 2027.
