Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra reacted to India’s shocking 34-run defeat against Ireland in the first T20I of the two-match series. The game took place in Belfast on Friday, June 26. Batting first, Ireland posted 182/9. However, India were eventually bundled out for just 148 in 18.5 overs, failing to even bat for the entire 20 overs as well.

“When we are making a new start and building towards 2028, under a new captain, we lost the very first match. It is not earth-shattering; it is not going to change the world. But the truth is that it is a bit of a wake-up call to tell yourself not to take the opposition lightly,” he said in a video on his official X handle.

“It was those two overs where we conceded 46 runs and dropped catches as well. Our famed batting line-up fell to ground, and debutants showed us the way out. Let’s be honest, hands on heart, only Bumrah and Pandya were not there, otherwise it was a full-strength team. Despite that, it has been a reality check,” he again stated.

However, this was India’s first-ever loss against Ireland in international cricket across formats. Ireland beat them for the first time in 12 attempts (nine T20Is and three ODIs). Aakash Chopra also added that India may go on to win the next game and even the upcoming series in England as well.

“Maybe we will win the next game, maybe we will beat England as well. But let’s be honest, international cricket will keep reminding you do not take anything or anyone for granted. You have to earn victory, and this is a cruel reminder. Take your catches, bowl well, you cannot get out by playing loose shots. Ireland has given us a shock and a cruel reminder that in international cricket you have to win everyday and give your 100% everyday,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
