England have named their XI for the opening T20I against India in Durham, making two changes from the side that last faced India in the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final. Saqib Mahmood comes in for Jamie Overton, while Luke Wood replaces Jofra Archer, who has been rested alongside Josh Tongue after England’s recent Test work against New Zealand. Harry Brook will lead the side in a high-pressure series opener at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.

Brook has already made it clear where his priorities lie. Ahead of the match, he said his focus remains entirely on England cricket and that his decision to skip franchise leagues outside The Hundred is part of his long-term commitment to the national team. He added that not playing in the IPL and other competitions gives him time to work on fitness and prepare to play across all three formats, something he has wanted since childhood.

“I’ve committed completely to England cricket. I don’t want to play any franchise cricket barring the Hundred. Everything that I want to do is to play cricket for England.”

Brook also said that the breaks in his calendar help him stay fresh and focused, especially as England continue to back him as a central figure in their white-ball future and a possible leader in Test cricket as well. He has been tipped as a strong long-term option at the top of the leadership ladder, and this India series is another major test of that growing responsibility. ([Reuters][2])

“Those periods let me focus on my fitness. They help me get ready to play all three formats. If I am or I’m not captain for England in Test cricket, I’d be happy to still be playing for England.”
