India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has said he sees eye to eye with head coach Gautam Gambhir on the way forward, stressing that the team will play aggressive, fearless cricket during the five-match T20I series against England. The new leadership pair is under early pressure after India’s 2-0 defeat to Ireland, but Iyer made it clear that the focus now is on building a united dressing room and turning the page quickly. India begins the series in Chester-le-Street on July 1.

Iyer said he wants his side to look imposing from the moment they walk onto the field, with every player buying into the same attacking mindset. He described the approach almost like a contest of intent, in which India aims to unsettle the opposition with body language, confidence, and pressure rather than caution. That message is especially timely after the Ireland tour, where India fell short in both games and let slip a series many expected them to control.
“I just like to be menacing to the opponents. I want to have that aggressive, fearless approach when I step onto the field. I want my troops to rally around that mindset,” Shreyas Iyer said.

The India captain also echoed Gambhir’s view that the group must stop leaning on past success and instead begin a fresh chapter. With several players set to feature in English conditions for the first time, Iyer accepted that the Ireland series exposed a few harsh lessons. He said the squad needs time together, especially on overseas tours, to develop trust, camaraderie and a stronger understanding of roles in pressure situations.
“I think Gauti bhai mentioned in one of his interviews that we were world champions. This is a new paragraph which starts all together where I am the leader of the team, and we are starting from zero again. Definitely not the start that we wanted, but a lot to learn coming into new conditions.”

India’s defeat to Ireland has already triggered criticism of the team management, with the tourists losing the opener by 34 runs and the second match by one run in Belfast. The result was Ireland’s first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India and India’s first T20I series defeat since 2023. Despite that setback, Iyer insisted the non-negotiable objective remains winning every game and making the opposition feel India’s presence in every phase.
“I want to win every match, and that’s the mindset I want to imbibe in each and every individual representing the country and wanting us to challenge the opponents as well.”

India now head into the England series with a chance to reset quickly. After the noise around the Ireland loss, the next five matches will show whether Iyer and Gambhir can turn their shared ideas into results.
