Ishan Kishan’s reign as the world’s No. 1 T20I batter got off to a disappointing start after the Indian opener was run out for a duck in the first T20I against England at Chester-le-Street. Just hours after climbing to the top of the ICC T20I batting rankings, Kishan suffered an unfortunate dismissal following a costly mix-up with opening partner Abhishek Sharma.

After winning the toss, India opted to bat first but endured an early setback when Sanju Samson departed in the second over. The pressure mounted immediately as Kishan was run out off the very next delivery, leaving the visitors in deep trouble during the powerplay.

The dismissal came after Kishan nudged the ball towards mid-wicket and called for a quick single. However, Abhishek Sharma remained rooted at the non-striker’s end after spotting the fielder moving swiftly towards the ball. Kishan had already committed to the run before being sent back, leaving him with no chance of making his ground.

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler completed the run-out comfortably after collecting the throw. As the umpires referred the decision to the third umpire, the stump microphone picked up a brief exchange between the two Indian batters.

Kishan questioned Abhishek over the decision not to run, saying, “It was my call; why didn’t you run?” Abhishek replied by suggesting the ball had gone too quickly to the fielder and asked whether Kishan thought he had made his ground. Replays later confirmed that the left-hander was well short of the crease.

The dismissal continued an unwanted trend for Kishan, who was also run out in the second T20I against Ireland after a misunderstanding with Tilak Varma. Despite his recent rise to the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings, the wicketkeeper-batter will now be eager to bounce back quickly and make a bigger impact in the remainder of the five-match series against England.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma provided India with some momentum by playing an attacking knock after the early wickets, but Kishan’s unfortunate run-out remained one of the defining moments of the opening contest.
