India’s men’s cricket team appears to be struggling to settle into the post-Suryakumar Yadav era after losing the former captain from both leadership duties and the squad only a few months after India’s memorable triumph at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil. What was meant to be a fresh reset under Shreyas Iyer has instead turned into a difficult phase for the reigning world champions.

Under Iyer, India has now suffered back-to-back T20I series defeats for the first time since February 2019. The new captain is still waiting for his first win in charge, having overseen five defeats in six matches, with one game washed out by rain. The poor run has included a 2-0 series loss to Ireland and a frustrating 0-3 deficit against England after four matches in the ongoing contest.
Suryakumar’s record as captain makes the contrast even starker. Between 2023 and 2026, he led India in 52 matches and lost only eight, while also finishing his tenure without dropping a bilateral series or tournament. That strong run has only sharpened scrutiny of India’s current struggles and raised questions about the team’s direction.

While Suryakumar’s removal was partly influenced by his batting form, fans have shown little patience with India’s recent slide. Social media has been flooded with memes and sharp reactions as head coach Gautam Gambhir continues to describe the team’s current phase as a reset.
With the five-match series already lost, India will be hoping to end the England tour on a more positive note in the fifth and final T20I at Southampton on July 11. The pressure is also mounting on the selection calls that saw Sanju Samson replaced by 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The move to back the teenage batting prodigy over Samson has not yet paid off. Samson, who was Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, was dropped after three low scores, while Sooryavanshi has taken his place since making his debut. The debate around that call is likely to continue until India find results to support their selection strategy.
