Despite leading India to the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav found himself out of the national T20I setup when the BCCI appointed Shreyas Iyer as captain for the post-World Cup assignments. The surprise omission sparked widespread debate, especially after India’s disappointing T20I tours of Ireland and England, where the Men in Blue failed to win a single series.

As Suryakumar approaches his 36th birthday, questions have naturally emerged over whether he still has a future in India’s plans ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup. However, a recent report suggests the selectors have not shut the door on the dynamic batter’s return. According to a BCCI source quoted by ANI, Suryakumar remains eligible for national selection but must force his way back through consistent performances in domestic cricket.

“The doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains in contention if he scores consistently in domestic cricket,” the source said.

The Mumbai batter will now have to rediscover his best form in domestic competitions while continuing to prove that he can contribute at the highest level. Although he endured a difficult 2025 season, Suryakumar showed signs of a revival earlier this year by scoring three half-centuries in the T20I series against New Zealand before launching India’s T20 World Cup campaign with a match-winning unbeaten 84.

However, his form dipped during the remainder of the tournament, as he managed only 158 runs across the next eight matches, including a duck in the final. His struggles continued in IPL 2026, where he scored 270 runs in 13 innings for Mumbai Indians at a strike rate of 147.54, performances that ultimately cost him his place in India’s T20I squad.

Interestingly, India’s fortunes have not improved since his omission. Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, the team has lost six of its last seven completed T20Is, with the remaining fixture ending in a rain-affected no result. As India now turns its attention to the ODI series against England, Suryakumar’s road back to international cricket appears challenging but far from over.
