India suffered an injury scare during the first ODI against England after captain Shubman Gill was forced to retire hurt in the middle of a well-paced innings at Edgbaston on Tuesday, July 14. The incident came at a crucial stage of India’s run chase, with the visitors looking firmly in control before Gill walked off the field in visible discomfort.

The Indian skipper had played a key role in stabilising the innings alongside Shreyas Iyer, as the duo stitched together a superb 100-run partnership after the early loss of wickets. Their stand shifted the momentum towards India and put England’s bowlers under immense pressure.
However, concerns grew when Gill suddenly stopped between overs and appeared to clutch the back of his right leg. He removed his gloves and bent over in discomfort, immediately raising fears of a possible hamstring injury. The Indian team physio rushed onto the field to assess the situation, stretching Gill’s right leg before working on his lower back to ease the pain.

Initially, the treatment appeared to have worked, with Shubman Gill resuming his innings after a brief interruption. But the discomfort returned just a couple of overs later. The physio was called out once again, and this time Gill decided against taking any further risks, opting to retire hurt and head back to the dressing room.
Washington Sundar replaced the India captain at the crease as the visitors hoped the injury was nothing more than severe cramps. With a packed international schedule ahead, India will be hoping Gill’s issue is not serious, especially considering his impressive form in white-ball cricket.

Gill’s exit proved to be a turning point in the contest, allowing England to claw their way back into the match with a couple of quick breakthroughs. The first came through the run-out of Shreyas Iyer, whose composed knock ended in unfortunate fashion.
The dismissal resulted from a moment of brilliant fielding by England captain Harry Brook. After Washington Sundar nudged the ball towards mid-on, the pair attempted a quick single. While sprinting back, Iyer altered his running line to avoid the throw, costing him valuable time. Brook collected the ball swiftly and produced a direct hit to catch Iyer short of his ground. The right-hander departed for a valuable 35 off 53 deliveries.

England struck again soon after when Josh Tongue dismissed KL Rahul for just one. Bowling a sharp back-of-a-length delivery outside off stump, Tongue induced an inside edge that crashed back onto the stumps, leaving India under fresh pressure.
At the time of writing, India required another 52 runs from 14 overs with six wickets in hand. Despite England’s late fightback, the visitors remained favourites, provided they could avoid another collapse and Gill’s injury did not prove to be more serious than initially feared.
