Former India captain Rohit Sharma has shut down the ongoing speculation around his international future with a thunderous response at Lord’s on Sunday. After becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the iconic Home of Cricket, Rohit made it clear that retirement talk is not on his mind. Ahead of India’s third ODI against England, rumours about Rohit Sharma’s future had intensified sharply. Reports and speculation suggested that the Lord’s clash could be his final appearance in India colours in the 50-over format.

“My job is with the bat. Come and play, represent my country. That’s what I have been told to do since I made my debut. That’s what I am going to do,” Rohit Sharma said. “Since I made my debut, the noise was there. Till the time I am going to be there, the noise will be there. Doesn’t matter to me. What matters is what I do on the field. I want to try and contribute to the success of the team. That’s all my focus is.”

Rohit added that pressure is part of the job when representing India at the highest level. Rather than being burdened by the scrutiny, he said he welcomes the intensity that comes with international cricket. “If there is no noise, there is no fun,” he said with typical bluntness. “My job is inside. Their job is outside. That’s how I look at it.”
That mindset was reflected in the manner of his innings. Chasing a massive target of 388 against a strong England side, Rohit produced a magnificent 138 off just 110 balls. His innings featured 17 boundaries and five sixes, and it became a landmark moment as he became the first Indian batter to score an ODI hundred at Lord’s.
Rohit gave India a flying start by adding 147 runs with Shubman Gill for the opening wicket. He then built another important stand of 113 runs with Virat Kohli, keeping India alive in a difficult chase. The build-up to the game had been dominated by reports suggesting that selectors had already decided to move on from Rohit in ODIs. Some speculation even claimed that the Lord’s match would be his last in the format. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stepped in before the contest and dismissed those rumours, making it clear that the veteran opener was not making a farewell appearance.
Inside the dressing room, too, there was no sign of panic over the outside chatter. India captain Shubman Gill backed Rohit strongly after the match and said the team had paid little attention to the reports circulating in the media. “He’s not told us anything,” Shubman Gill said. “I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team. The way Rohit bhai paced his innings was outstanding. Most of the time, I was at the non-striker’s end just watching him bat. It was truly a treat to watch.”

With the next ODI World Cup still some way away, Rohit will continue to face questions about his long-term future. By then, he will be a few months short of 41, and competition for spots in India’s limited-overs setup will only grow stronger. But performances like the one at Lord’s show that he is far from done.
The numbers also support his case. Rohit has scored 1,029 runs, including three centuries, in 23 ODIs over the last two years.
