Former India player-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has questioned the Indian team’s batting order after their collapse in the second ODI against England. He also wondered why all-rounder Shivam Dube is being played if he is slotted to bat at No. 8. However, he was dismissed for a golden duck as India were bowled out for 233 in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16 as well.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ he said, “It was going well when we got to bat first. Shubman Gill was batting very well. Rohit Sharma was scratchy. He played till the 18th over to score 26 runs. Virat Kohli missed out in the first match for sure, but he was batting beautifully. We were 178/3 at one stage. After that, 233 all out. How do we do this? Such a collapse was strange.”

“Ishan Kishan couldn’t play well. After that, we kept Shivam Dube at No. 8 in the batting order. It’s beyond my understanding. If you are making Shivam Dube a No. 8 player, then why are you playing him? Either you are thinking that there won’t be a collapse at all and that we would send him in the last 10 overs, if required, or else we would send him when we would have sent everyone,” he further added.

“That’s not how you prepare an all-rounder. He is being made to bowl overs for sure. However, the truth is that Shivam Dube shouldn’t go at No. 8. I get it that Washington Sundar and Axar Patel scored runs in the last match, but I still felt Shivam Dube could have been sent slightly up the order,” he stated.

However, Aakash Chopra also added that the Indian bowlers then let England play freely after the hosts had been reduced to 125/5.

“You should have batted better, and 233 runs shouldn’t have been scored, but after that, you had grabbed them. They were 125/5 when Jos Buttler got out. Now, we are in the game, but Joe Root bats extremely well. He remained unbeaten on 99. There was a very important partnership with Will Jacks, and Joe Root won the match in the end with Gus Atkinson. It was the same problem we had discussed earlier. Only five bowlers were there, and in that, Shivam Dube was the fifth. Then, winning is not easy. Washington Sundar wasn’t even made to bowl,” he concluded.
