India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has enjoyed a dream start to his international career, breaking multiple records within weeks of making his debut. The 15-year-old became the youngest player to represent India during the T20I series against England before creating more history on the Zimbabwe tour by becoming the youngest batter to score a fifty in men’s international cricket and the youngest Player of the Series in men’s internationals.

The remarkable start has sparked comparisons with some of cricket’s all-time greats, but former India batter Robin Uthappa believes it is still too early to predict how Sooryavanshi’s career will unfold. According to Uthappa, rival teams are yet to devise plans to counter the youngster’s aggressive batting, and the real challenge will begin once bowlers start targeting his weaknesses.

Speaking on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel, Uthappa drew an interesting comparison between Sooryavanshi and Australian legend Don Bradman, highlighting similarities in their batting techniques.

“It’s hard to say that now because we haven’t really seen bowlers respond to what Vaibhav is doing. Teams are still trying to understand his game. When Bradman dominated, opponents eventually came up with the Bodyline tactic. Vaibhav has a similar technique to Bradman in the sense that he is rarely a candidate for LBW,” Robin Uthappa explained.

The former wicketkeeper-batter added that Sooryavanshi’s long-term success will depend on whether he can maintain both consistency and his fearless approach. Uthappa believes that if the youngster can average in the high 40s while retaining his explosive strike rate, he could establish himself as a truly unique cricketer.

Uthappa also reflected on how modern cricket has become more accepting of unconventional techniques. Using MS Dhoni as an example, he said today’s game rewards players who trust their natural instincts rather than strictly following textbook methods.

“Outliers are far more common now because players are no longer restricted by traditional batting or bowling techniques. They rely on their natural ability and make it work. That’s why someone like MS Dhoni was accepted for doing things his own way,” Robin Uthappa said.

He added that Sooryavanshi belongs to the same category of fearless innovators while pointing out that modern cricket still has room for technically sound batters such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill, each of whom has succeeded with a distinct style.

With record-breaking performances already to his name, Sooryavanshi has announced himself on the international stage. However, as Uthappa noted, the teenager’s biggest test will come when opposition bowlers begin adapting to his game in the years ahead.
