Mohammad Shami’s exclusion from India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series has reinforced a clear message from the selectors: they are ready to look ahead rather than revisit the past. The veteran fast bowler did everything in his power to force a comeback, but the India team management now appears determined to invest in the next generation of pace talent instead of extending the careers of senior seamers.

After being left out of the national set-up, Shami turned to domestic cricket and let his performances speak for him. He bowled long, demanding spells in the Ranji Trophy, picked up 37 wickets, and repeatedly made it clear that he was fully fit and available for selection. Jasprit Bumrah remains the undisputed leader of India’s fast-bowling unit, but his workload continues to be managed carefully. With the premier pacer unlikely to feature in every Test or series, the selectors know they need to build a deeper and more dependable pace battery around him.

Shami’s experience could have helped India bridge that gap more smoothly. Beyond adding proven quality whenever Bumrah was unavailable, the senior pacer could also have guided the younger bowlers coming through the system. However, the report suggests the selectors believe that continuing to rely on established names would only slow down the inevitable transition.
