Former Australia head coach Justin Langer has dismissed speculation linking him with the vacant England men’s Test coaching role, confirming that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has not approached him following Brendon McCullum’s departure from the position earlier this month.
Langer had emerged as one of the leading names reportedly under consideration for the high-profile role, alongside former England coach Andy Flower. However, after Flower ruled himself out of contention, reports continued to suggest that Langer was among the frontrunners. The former Australian opener has now put those rumours to rest.
Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Justin Langer clarified that he has had no communication regarding the position. “No, I haven’t. I haven’t heard from anyone. You read all this stuff, but it’s all paper talk and rumours,” Langer said.

Despite distancing himself from the speculation, Langer admitted that the England coaching job is one of the most prestigious positions in world cricket. He believes that leading England, alongside Australia and India, represents one of the biggest coaching opportunities in the game.
“There are three coaching roles in world cricket that stand above the rest – Australia, India and England. Any coach would naturally think about those opportunities if they came along. But at the moment, it’s all hypothetical,” he added.

When asked who could eventually replace McCullum, Langer avoided naming any specific candidate. Instead, he stressed that the next Test coach must share a clear vision with McCullum, who continues to oversee England’s white-ball teams.
“Whoever gets the job will need to work closely with Baz. They must have a clear philosophy, strong leadership qualities and a shared vision for where English cricket is heading. That’s the foundation of any successful coaching partnership,” Justin Langer explained.

Several prominent names have been linked with the vacancy in recent weeks, including Stephen Fleming, Richard Dawson, Jonathan Trott, and Tom Moody. Former England batter Marcus Trescothick has also emerged as a potential interim option for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, scheduled to begin on August 16.
Meanwhile, Langer remains focused on his current assignment with the Manchester Super Giants in the 2026 Men’s Hundred. The former Australia coach has enjoyed a promising start to the campaign, guiding his side to two victories in their opening three matches while putting an end to speculation surrounding his immediate coaching future.
