The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of England’s men’s Test team, ushering in a new era for the side ahead of a crucial phase in the World Test cycle. The announcement was made on Thursday, July 30, with Fleming replacing Brendon McCullum, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month. In another major development, the ECB also confirmed the return of Joe Root as England’s Test captain. Root previously led the side between 2017 and 2022 and remains England’s most successful Test captain, having guided the team to 27 victories in 65 matches.
According to an official ECB statement, Fleming’s appointment followed an extensive recruitment process featuring several highly qualified candidates. After multiple rounds of discussions, the selection panel unanimously agreed that the former New Zealand skipper was the ideal candidate to lead England’s red-ball setup into its next chapter.
Fleming will officially assume charge after England’s upcoming three-match home Test series against Pakistan. Until then, former England opener Marcus Trescothick will continue as interim head coach for the series against the Babar Azam-led side. The former Chennai Super Kings head coach is expected to travel to England later this summer before beginning preparations for the team’s Test tour of South Africa.

It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed,” Stephen Fleming said in the ECB release. The 53-year-old also praised the work done by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, saying he intends to build on the strong foundation they have created while ensuring England remain competitive in both the present and the future.

“I am looking forward to working with the players and building on the progress made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Of course, the ambition is always to win now. But equally, it’s about ensuring the team is well placed for the medium and long-term future. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team, and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers,” Fleming said.
Fleming also expressed his excitement about working with Joe Root, describing the experienced batter as a “generational talent” capable of achieving even greater success in his second stint as captain.

The former New Zealand captain also highlighted Harry Brook’s importance to England’s future, backing the young batter to continue evolving as both a player and leader. “I’m also excited to work with Harry Brook. The best players are never finished products, and helping Harry continue to develop his extraordinary talent and leadership will be an important part of this journey,” he added.
Reacting to his reappointment as Test captain, Root admitted he was honoured to once again lead England in the longest format. The experienced batter said he is eager to guide the next generation of players while embracing the challenge of captaining the side again.
“It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men’s Test captain again. The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again while working with Brendon McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward,” Joe Root said.

Root also welcomed the opportunity to work alongside Fleming, praising the New Zealander’s leadership qualities and vast coaching experience. “The opportunity to do that alongside Stephen is also a huge motivator.
