India have received a significant boost ahead of their crucial ICC World Test Championship campaign, with premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah reportedly declared fit for next month’s two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The pace spearhead has successfully cleared his fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru and is now expected to be available for the entire tour.

Bumrah’s fitness was one of the biggest talking points ahead of the squad announcement. Although he was included in India’s squad for the Sri Lanka series, his selection was subject to medical clearance after suffering an impact injury during the recently concluded ODI series against England. The injury forced the 32-year-old to miss the third ODI at Lord’s, where India suffered a 2-1 series defeat.

According to a senior BCCI official, Bumrah has completed all the mandatory fitness protocols and is ready to return to competitive cricket.

“Jasprit Bumrah has recovered from his impact injury. He has cleared the fitness Tests mandated by the COE. Hopefully he will be available for both games as he is integral to the team’s plans,” the official told PTI.

The two-match Test series against Sri Lanka begins on August 15 in Galle, with the second and final Test scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23.

The upcoming series carries enormous significance for India in the ICC World Test Championship. Having already suffered four defeats in nine matches this cycle, including a disappointing 2-0 home series loss to South Africa last year, India must win seven of their remaining nine Tests to stay in contention for a place in the WTC final. A clean sweep in Sri Lanka would provide much-needed momentum before a challenging away Test series against New Zealand.

India’s injury concerns, however, remain far from over. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy have both been ruled out due to hamstring and quadriceps injuries respectively. Washington Sundar will miss the opening Test with a hamstring issue, while Akash Deep continues his rehabilitation after suffering stress reactions in his back. Bumrah’s return, therefore, comes as a timely boost for an Indian pace attack dealing with multiple injury setbacks.
