India all-rounder Manav Suthar is set for another busy stretch of cricket after being named in the national squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner, who recently made his India debut in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, will also return to county cricket after the Sri Lanka assignment, with Warwickshire confirming his availability for the final four matches of the Rothesay County Championship season.

Suthar earlier played two County Championship matches for Warwickshire this season, against Yorkshire and Somerset, and made an immediate impression. He picked up 11 wickets across those two games, including his maiden five-wicket haul for the club against Somerset, further underlining his growing reputation as a dependable red-ball spinner.

Warwickshire’s remaining fixtures are against Hampshire, Glamorgan, Essex and Leicestershire in September, and Suthar is expected to be part of that final run of matches. The stint will mark his second spell with the county in the same season, giving him valuable red-ball exposure before and after India’s Sri Lanka tour.

The Rajasthan cricketer has been steadily building his case as one of India’s most promising spin-bowling all-rounders. Since making his first-class debut in 2022, Suthar has claimed 147 wickets in 32 matches at an impressive average of 25.13, including three 10-wicket match hauls. With the bat, he has also contributed 1,071 runs at an average of 26.12, with one century and six half-centuries, proving his value as a genuine lower-order option.

Suthar’s international debut came in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh last month, and he made a memorable start to his India career. After scoring 28 runs in India’s first innings total of 564 for 8 declared, the youngster delivered with the ball in a big way as Afghanistan were dismissed for 152. He led the attack with outstanding figures of 6 for 33 in 22 overs on debut.

Afghanistan were forced to follow on and collapsed again for 112, with Suthar adding another wicket to finish with seven scalps in the match. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award and boosted his standing ahead of India’s Sri Lanka tour. On spin-friendly surfaces, the left-armer could play a major role as Shubman Gill and Co. look to build momentum in the World Test Championship cycle.
