The Indian cricket team is grappling with a growing injury crisis ahead of its crucial Test tour of Sri Lanka, with several key players either sidelined or awaiting fitness clearance. The recurring fitness setbacks have emerged as a major concern for the team management, prompting the BCCI to closely examine its medical and support systems. India’s injury list has steadily expanded over the past few months, with premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah becoming the latest high-profile casualty.

Bumrah’s absence is a significant blow to India’s pace attack, while Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy were also unavailable for selection due to fitness issues. All-rounder Washington Sundar has already been ruled out of the Sri Lanka series, further depleting the squad. Meanwhile, promising batter Sai Sudharsan has been included in the squad but will only be available after receiving clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), highlighting the cautious approach being adopted with recovering players.
According to a report by the Times of India, the BCCI is expected to conduct a detailed review of the team’s injury management process in the coming weeks. The assessment comes shortly after the departures of assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T. Dilip, with the board now reportedly evaluating other members of the support staff.

The spotlight has also turned towards head physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain, who succeeded Nitin Patel in 2022, and team doctor Dr. Rizwan Khan. Reports suggest both officials could face uncertain futures after the Sri Lanka tour as the board seeks accountability for the increasing number of injuries within the national setup.
The injury issue reportedly became a major discussion point during India’s recent white-ball tour of England. Captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir are understood to be frustrated by the constant disruption, with repeated injuries making it difficult to field their preferred playing XI. The recent inclusion of Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi as Bumrah’s replacement further underlines the extent of the team’s selection challenges.

The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence has also come under scrutiny, with concerns raised over player workload management and rehabilitation protocols. Several senior cricketers have reportedly sought medical advice from specialists outside the BCCI system, while some within the setup believe the transition from former strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai to Adrian Le Roux has not been as seamless as anticipated.

A source told the Times of India that both the head physiotherapist’s role and the CoE’s injury management practices are being reviewed. The source questioned whether players such as Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were rushed back before achieving full fitness, stressing that the support staff must be proactive in identifying injury risks instead of accelerating players’ returns.
With India’s World Test Championship campaign at stake, the BCCI now faces increasing pressure to address its injury management processes and ensure the team can consistently field its strongest possible XI in the months ahead.
