Former India player Wasim Jaffer has called chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s term with the BCCI’s senior men’s selection committee successful so far. His comments came ahead of India’s two-match away Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning on August 15 in Galle as well. Agarkar was appointed chief selector in July 2023 as well. While his contract was originally scheduled to end in June 2026, the board extended it by three months as well.

During a discussion on his YouTube channel (Wasim Jaffer Official), he said,  “I think if you talk about winning, then this tenure has been successful. You are known by your results, so I believe the trophies we have won speak for themselves. If we talk about the way the Indian team has played, especially in white-ball cricket, we have dominated.”

“If we leave out the 2023 World Cup final, India have won the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy and then two T20 World Cups back-to-back. So, India have dominated white-ball cricket. But we have that kind of talent, and we have dominated white-ball cricket. So, in terms of performances, you would count this stint as a successful stint,” he further added.

While Wasim Jaffer added that Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector has been successful in terms of results, he said that the handling of certain players and some selection decisions have raised questions too. He gave the example of Mohammed Shami and Sarfaraz Khan’s continued exclusion, Abhimanyu Easwaran’s situation, and Auqib Nabi’s late inclusion as well.

He concluded, “But the way some players have been handled and some of the selections that have been made are debatable, there is no doubt about that. There is Mohammed Shami, then Sarfaraz Khan, and we keep mentioning Abhimanyu Easwaran’s name, now Auqib Nabi, he wasn’t selected earlier and has now been selected as a replacement, these are all things that I feel can be discussed in a negative way. Why are these selections not happening, and why are players not getting clarity?”
