Nearly two years after his last international appearance, Sarfaraz Khan is delighted to have earned a recall to India’s Test squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. The middle-order batter made his Test debut in 2024 and featured in all six of his matches that year, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including one century and three half-centuries.
Sarfaraz was part of India’s squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy but did not get an opportunity to play. He was subsequently left out of the squad for the 2025 England tour, forcing him to continue his domestic grind with Mumbai.
The 28-year-old responded by maintaining his strong run-scoring form in the Ranji Trophy. During the 2025 season, Sarfaraz finished as Mumbai’s third-highest run-scorer, accumulating 429 runs at an impressive average of 53.62. His consistency eventually kept him in contention for a return to the national side.

An injury to India’s No. 3 batter Sai Sudharsan opened the door for Sarfaraz. The selectors opted to bring the Mumbai batter back into the Test squad as Sudharsan’s replacement, handing him another opportunity to prove himself at the highest level.

Following the announcement, Sarfaraz celebrated his comeback on social media. He shared pictures of himself wearing the India jersey alongside his father, reflecting his happiness after finally earning another chance with the national team.
Sarfaraz will join the Shubman Gill-led Indian squad ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, beginning on August 15. The two-match series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle and will be important for India’s hopes of reaching the final. The top two teams at the end of the championship cycle will qualify for the title clash.

India currently sit fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having recorded four wins, four defeats and one draw.
Gill’s side began preparations for the Sri Lanka challenge with a three-day practice match, securing a six-wicket victory on Sunday. However, India’s plans have been disrupted by several injuries, with Jasprit Bumrah, Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana among the players unavailable for the tour.
