Moeen Ali has already started planning the next chapter of his cricket career after stepping away from international cricket in 2024. The former England all-rounder enjoyed a distinguished career across formats and, at 39, continues to remain active in domestic and franchise cricket. Moeen has represented Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and Southern Brave in The Hundred during the summer, allowing him to stay involved as a player while gradually exploring opportunities in coaching. His transition into coaching has already begun, with the Birmingham-born cricketer working with England Lions development programmes.
In February, Moeen Ali joined Andrew Flintoff’s backroom staff during an England Lions white-ball camp in the United Arab Emirates. The experience has strengthened his desire to eventually take up a senior coaching role with England. “The ultimate dream is to coach England, of course, but I know there is a lot of work to put in before that,” Moeen was quoted as saying by The Independent.
The former England star is now working towards completing his England and Wales Cricket Board Level Three coaching qualification. He views the process as an important opportunity to learn the technical and tactical aspects of coaching before taking on greater responsibilities.

Moeen also sees similarities between becoming an international player and progressing towards a senior coaching position. Just as young cricketers dream of representing England while working their way through county cricket, he believes coaches must also build their experience gradually.
“When you’re a young player learning to play county cricket the dream is to play for England and it’s the same with coaching. You never know how things turn out,” he said.

His current playing commitments have limited the amount of time he can dedicate to coaching. However, Moeen expects to have greater availability during the upcoming winter and plans to use that period to gain valuable experience.
“I’ve been asked about doing Lions stuff quite often but it’s been pretty difficult while I’m still playing. I think next year I’ll be a lot more available to do that,” Moeen Ali explained.
He is open to working with different England development teams, including the Lions and Under-19 setup, as he looks to build a strong foundation for his coaching career. “After this winter I’ll be more free to coach. Whether it’s the Lions, the under-19s, whatever they want, it’s something I’m really looking forward to doing. I want to gain my experience and put in the hard yards as a coach,” he added.

Moeen has already identified an area where he believes he can make a significant impact: England’s batting technique. Drawing from his international experience, he feels English batters can sometimes be vulnerable to deliveries that bring bowled and LBW dismissals into play.
“With England batters in particular, we can get exposed big time – lots of bowled, lots of LBWs,” Moeen Ali said.
He believes coaches should be more involved in correcting technical weaknesses rather than simply allowing players to figure things out themselves. According to Moeen, modern coaching needs to strike the right balance between freedom and constructive guidance, with players sometimes benefiting from being given direct and honest feedback.
