Former India captain and legendary cricketer Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint after allegedly receiving multiple threatening letters, including one that reportedly threatened to kill him and his wife, Dona. According to reports, the letters had been arriving over the past few months, prompting Kolkata Police to launch an investigation.

Ganguly, who currently serves as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), approached Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata after his office received the latest communication on Monday. The complaint was filed by his manager, who informed the police about the serious nature of the threats.

A senior police officer confirmed that the matter was being treated seriously and that investigators were working to establish the identity and motive of the sender. “We are taking the complaint seriously and have begun an investigation. We are examining the letters, their source and the courier trail to identify the person responsible,” the officer said.

According to the complaint, two letters received at Ganguly’s office on Monday contained explicit threats against the former India captain and his wife. The communications also allegedly threatened people close to the couple.

Police have begun examining the contents of the letters and are investigating whether all the threatening messages were sent by the same individual. Officials are also attempting to determine why Ganguly was targeted.

A preliminary investigation reportedly suggested that the letters may have been sent through a courier service by someone based in Belgharia in North 24 Parganas district. Investigators have since contacted the courier agency to obtain details about the consignments and trace their movement.

The police are also examining a mobile number allegedly linked to the sender. According to the officer, investigators have already identified one number and are working to establish its connection to the person responsible for the threats.

The letters had reportedly been reaching Ganguly’s name for around six months, although they were not initially treated as a serious concern. The latest communications, however, prompted the former India captain’s office to formally approach the police.

Ganguly remains an influential figure in Indian cricket following a celebrated playing career and subsequent administrative roles. The former India captain also served as BCCI president before taking charge of the CAB. With the investigation now underway, Kolkata Police are examining the courier trail, mobile details and other available evidence to identify the sender. Officials are also trying to determine whether a single person was responsible for the alleged threats and establish the motive behind the communications.
