The pitch at the Galle International Stadium has become a major talking point ahead of the India vs Sri Lanka Test series, with the surface likely to play a crucial role in determining the team combinations for the opening match. India head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak inspected the 22-yard strip on Wednesday before the ground staff returned with a lawn mower.

The first Test between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin in Galle on Saturday, August 15. With conditions in Galle often influencing the balance between pace and spin, both teams will be closely monitoring the surface before finalising their playing XIs. India also entered the series with a strong record, having remained unbeaten against Sri Lanka in Test cricket since 2015.

Sri Lanka held a closed-door training session on Wednesday, with the Galle International Stadium kept away from the public and the media. During the session, Gambhir and Kotak inspected the pitch while the ground staff briefly removed the covers before putting them back in place.

Less than two hours after the Indian coaches left, the main cover was removed again, and the ground staff brought out a mower. Several passes were made across the pitch before a soft roller was used. The surface was then left exposed to the sun for some time before being covered again.

Weather conditions could also influence the pitch and India’s preparation. The Indian team has experienced brief but heavy spells of rain since arriving at its sea-facing resort. Although Wednesday offered clearer conditions, more rain has been forecast in Galle during the week.

The pitch will be particularly important for India’s bowling combination. The visitors could opt for three specialist pacers or three frontline spinners, depending on how the surface looks on the morning of the Test. If the pitch offers limited turn, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Brar could form the pace attack, while Kuldeep Yadav remains a key spin option.

India was without training on August 11 and 12 but are scheduled to return to the Galle ground on Thursday. The team has already completed three intense training sessions in Colombo and played a three-day warm-up match at the NCC Ground.

The Sri Lanka series also carries added importance for Gambhir. India have struggled during his tenure, including home Test series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa. Their recent white-ball results in Ireland and England have added further pressure, with India winning only one of 10 matches across those tours.

India will now look to begin their WTC campaign strongly in Galle. They have not lost a Test against Sri Lanka since 2015 and have won 10 of their last 12 matches against them.
