Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara opined on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out on Day 1 of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka as an unfortunate one. He, however, said that KL Rahul should have aborted attempting a run while Jaiswal had lost his balance after colliding with the bowler at the non-striker’s end. Jaiswal (32) was looking good for a big knock when he was run out bizarrely.

On the last ball of the 11th over, Rahul hit a flighted delivery from Keshara Nuwantha to mid-on as well. The bowler and Jaiswal collided while the bowler was attempting to stop the ball. The batter was looking to take a run. Amid all the confusion, both batters ended up at one end, and Jaiswal had to return to the dugout as well.

During a discussion on Cricinfo, Cheteshwar Pujara said: “It was unfortunate. There was a big mix-up. And, I felt honestly, when KL saw Jaiswal was on the floor, he should have immediately gone back, rather than still going for that single. In the Test format, you don’t mind missing a single but there is a prize on your wicket. So, it was a bit unfortunate for Yashasvi.”

While stating that Yashasvi Jaiswal might be finding it hard to limit his aggressive instincts in Test cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara lauded him for realising the importance of defence as well in red-ball cricket as well.

“The way he was batting, it was impressive to see that he is finding the right balance of when to attack, when to defend. He is an aggressive player. There is no doubt about it. But, at the same time, you can’t be over-aggressive in the Test format, where there is enough time. I think Yashasvi is trying to find that balance and he is getting there. Hopefully, with some more runs, with some good innings, he will gain that confidence again,” Cheteshwar Pujara concluded.
