Former India player turned commentator Ajay Jadeja has said that Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out in the first Test against Sri Lanka could have been stopped had KL Rahul returned to the striker’s end as well. He also stated that while Jaiswal had fallen and couldn’t understand what Rahul was trying to say, Rahul was watching everything. Jaiswal scored 32 runs off 37 balls before being run out on Day 1 in Galle.

During a discussion on Sony Sports, Jadeja said, “The one who was standing and had not slipped could have gone back. How could the man lying down have reached there? If he didn’t go back himself, he had realized. He had committed so far ahead. When a guy gets out, someone has made a mistake. Yashasvi Jaiswal had fallen, and he had no idea.”

“There is just one thing. Even when he got up, he didn’t look toward his partner but toward the ball. He didn’t understand what his partner was trying to say. It’s a split-second thing there, but I am looking at it the other way. KL Rahul was watching everything. He had not fallen. When he ran after hitting the ball, he too didn’t see his partner on the ground. So the main thing is that they didn’t see each other,” he further added.

Meanwhile, former India batter Ajinkya Rahane added that Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t realise the mid-on fielder’s position after he had stumbled as well.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal had gotten out early in the practice match and was batting with the determination to score runs. He got off balance and didn’t realize where the fielder was, and KL Rahul had come too far ahead by then. When you are batting so well in the first innings of the first Test match, there is disappointment as a batter if you get out like this,” he said.

“There are things which you cannot explain. You get very little time to react. KL Rahul probably realized that he had come too far ahead. He would have probably gotten run out had he gone back. Miscommunication and misunderstandings happen in the game. One needs to accept. I didn’t feel it was one guy’s mistake. You move forward quickly if you accept,” he concluded.
