Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has called for changes to the Test team following the side’s shocking nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin. Australia’s batting has come under increasing scrutiny, and the historic loss on home soil has intensified the debate over whether the team needs to begin rebuilding its top order. Ponting believes Australia has reached a point where introducing younger players into the batting lineup can no longer be delayed.

Speaking to Channel 7, he admitted that he would normally be reluctant to advocate major changes but felt the recent performances had provided enough evidence for a fresh approach. “This ends up being a very embarrassing defeat. I think it’s inevitable they have to make a change,” Ricky Ponting said. He added that he had already felt at the end of the previous summer that Australia needed to begin regenerating the Test side based on the performances of several players.

Ponting suggested that Australia could consider bringing in a new opener and another batter at No. 3. According to the former captain, the team would not lose much by giving younger players an opportunity, particularly after the disappointing performances that preceded the Bangladesh series.

“I’m the last one who wants to make change,” Ricky Ponting explained, highlighting his preference for keeping an established group together. However, he insisted that enough evidence had emerged to suggest Australia could benefit from beginning the transition.

Former Australia bowler Trent Copeland was equally critical of the result, describing the defeat to Bangladesh as unacceptable. Speaking to SEN, Copeland said the Australian players and coaching staff would be deeply disappointed but stressed that the loss should not be treated as the end of the world.

However, he maintained that Australia simply cannot afford to lose a Test against Bangladesh on home soil. Copeland also pointed out that the responsibility ultimately rests with the players who took the field and the coaching staff led by Andrew McDonald. Bangladesh dominated large parts of the Test and deserved their historic victory. After Australia chose to bat first, Hasan Mahmud produced a sensational six-wicket haul to bowl the hosts out for just 198.

Bangladesh responded with 426, securing a massive 228-run first-innings lead. Tanzid Hasan Tamim created history by becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia, making 101. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also played a crucial role with a 65-run contribution.

Australia showed greater resistance in their second innings, with Cameron Green scoring a fighting 104. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to provide enough support, and Australia were dismissed for 284. Mehidy Hasan completed a five-wicket haul as Bangladesh wrapped up the innings early on Day 4.

Set a modest target of 57, Bangladesh completed the chase with ease, losing only one wicket. Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque remained unbeaten to seal a memorable nine-wicket victory and leave Australia facing serious questions about the future of their Test batting lineup.
