Former India player Venkatapathy Raju has said that Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dismissed several times while attempting shots square of the wicket. He also asked him to get his eye in at the start of his innings, stating that the aggressive batter can play this later as well. However, Jaiswal was dismissed for a three-ball duck in India’s second innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Tuesday, August 18 as well.

During a discussion on Sony Sports, Raju said, “Square of the wicket is his strength and his weakness as well. We have seen him getting out there many times. Spend a little time. Stroke-makers can cover it up. His feet were on the leg stump, and he reached for the ball. Everyone would say that it was a plan, but there was no plan.”
“It’s unfortunate, as he didn’t know much about the bounce either. It was the third ball of the innings. He played away from the body. It didn’t bounce much, and that’s why it hit the bottom of the bat. He is a good stroke-maker, but he needs to learn. If openers spend time, they get loose balls, which they can convert on such a wicket,” he shared again.

Meanwhile, former India player Ajay Jadeja said that Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to be extra cautious as he is going through a rough patch as well.

“You learn from your mistakes. This game also teaches you. He scored a century in an ODI, but still there is no place for him. It means you need to become extra cautious when your time is not going well. He got out square of the wicket in the side game as well. Then he got run out after falling, and that has nothing to do with cricket,” he said.
“There are phases in the game when you need to wait a little extra. Patience is not just about an innings. At times, there is a phase in a career when you need to do things you don’t like or isn’t natural for you. However, once he makes a score of around 50, the game will again start looking easy. Then he will be able to hit both the cut and the square drive,” Jadeja concluded.
