Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta slammed left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav for bowling quicker through the air in the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle. On a pitch helping spinners, Kuldeep has been off the mark, claiming only a solitary wicket in his 17 overs as well. However, he gave away 65 runs in 14 overs in the first innings even as
India bowled Sri Lanka out for 284. Meanwhile, the other two Indian spinners, Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja, have done well with nine wickets between them across the two innings.

Talking about Kuldeep Yadav’s performance so far in the Galle Test, Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel, “India are missing an off-spinner in this game against Sri Lanka’s left-handers. But I want Kuldeep Yadav to give the ball more loop. He seems to be bowling faster in this match. He needs to give the ball more air, which will also help him get drift. Jadeja and Suthar are going to be the two most important bowlers for India on Day 5. Even the short-ball tactics from the pacers with the old ball might be a viable option. India also need to watch out for the rain and ensure they speed things up to have a crack with the second new ball.”

Deep Dasgupta also believes the threat of rain will test Shubman Gill’s captaincy skills on Day 5 of the opening Test against Sri Lanka as well.

“With one eye on the weather, Day 5 will be a test of Shubman Gill’s captaincy. How he handles his bowlers with the threat of rain will be crucial. It would have been straightforward if all 90 overs were guaranteed. But now his captaincy will be tested,” Deep Dasgupta concluded.
