Former India captain Rohit Sharma has returned to training, once again putting the spotlight on his ODI future ahead of the upcoming series against the West Indies. With India already looking towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, Rohit’s place in the long-term plans remains a major talking point. Rohit was recently seen training at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) facility in BKC, Mumbai. A video showing the veteran batter running at the facility quickly gained attention on social media, with fans eager to see him back in action.

The upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies could prove important for Rohit as he looks to strengthen his case for a place in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup. The series is scheduled to begin on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, followed by matches in Guwahati on September 30 and New Chandigarh on October 3. Rohit remains one of the most successful ODI batters of his generation.

In 288 matches, he has accumulated 11,895 runs at an average of 48.95, including 34 centuries and 62 fifties. His unbeaten 264 against Sri Lanka remains the highest individual score in ODI cricket. The veteran opener also showed that he still possesses the ability to produce match-winning performances. After managing scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs against England, Rohit responded with a spectacular 138 off 110 balls at Lord’s. His innings featured 17 fours and five sixes and ended an 11-ODI wait for a century.

That performance strengthened his argument for an extended ODI run, particularly after he had already retired from Test and T20I cricket. Rohit has also made his desire to represent India at the 2027 World Cup known.

However, his age remains a key factor in the selection debate. Rohit will turn 40 during the 2027 World Cup, prompting questions over whether selectors should begin transitioning towards younger options such as Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The BCCI has maintained that Rohit’s future will be assessed series by series rather than through an immediate decision. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also dismissed reports suggesting that the Lord’s ODI was intended to be Rohit’s farewell appearance.

There have nevertheless been reports of differences involving Rohit and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, particularly regarding the team’s long-term plans. Other reports have also suggested concerns over Gautam Gambhir’s influence within the setup, although these claims remain part of the wider speculation surrounding Indian cricket.

For now, Rohit’s return to training suggests that the former captain remains focused on competing at the highest level. His performances against the West Indies could go a long way towards determining whether the Hitman remains part of India’s ODI plans ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
