Yashasvi Jaiswal’s inconsistent run with the bat has become a talking point after the Indian opener endured another difficult outing in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Despite possessing the talent and attacking style to dominate bowling attacks, Jaiswal struggled to convert his opportunities into substantial scores in the series opener.

The 24-year-old managed 32 runs in India’s first innings before being run out following a mix-up with KL Rahul. While the dismissal was unfortunate, his second-innings performance was more disappointing. Jaiswal was dismissed for a three-ball duck, leaving him with limited returns from the Test despite India securing a convincing 165-run victory.

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Jaiswal needs to carefully assess his recent dismissals and regain clarity in his batting approach. While Ashwin acknowledged that the opener was unlucky to be run out in the first innings, he felt the second-innings dismissal offered Jaiswal something to work on.

“KL Rahul continued his form, he came in to bat after cramps but could not get his hundred, but I think it was fantastic from him. Yashasvi Jaiswal was unlucky in the first innings, and the way he got out, he can relook that, that second-innings dismissal of his. He is a very, very good player, but his recent form has not supported him,” Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin stressed that mental clarity and concentration could be crucial for Jaiswal as he attempts to rediscover his rhythm. The former spinner backed the young batter to overcome the difficult phase, pointing out that even highly talented players can experience periods when runs become difficult to find.

“I think clarity of mind is really important for Yashasvi, and I really hope he can come back to that, concentrate well on his batting, and score a big one,” Ravichandran Ashwin said.

Jaiswal’s recent numbers underline the concern. He has played two Tests in 2026 so far, scoring only 56 runs at an average of 18.66. With India preparing for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo from August 23, Jaiswal will be eager to put the Galle disappointment behind him.

A strong innings in Colombo could provide the confidence boost Jaiswal needs and help him regain the consistency that has made him one of India’s most promising Test batters.
