Manav Suthar has made a remarkable start to his Test career, and former India batter Hanuma Vihari believes the young spinner has all the qualities required to become one of the best bowlers in the longest format. Suthar played a starring role in India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle, claiming 10 wickets in only his second Test.

The 24-year-old left-arm spinner took four wickets in the first innings before producing figures of 6/55 in the second innings. His impressive performance took his Test tally to 17 wickets from just two matches, at an outstanding average of 11.35. Suthar had already made an impact on debut against Afghanistan in June 2026. He returned figures of 6/33 at Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, recording the second-best bowling figures by an Indian bowler on Test debut after Narendra Hirwani.

Vihari believes Suthar’s success is not simply the result of good fortune or favourable conditions. Instead, he pointed to the spinner’s technical foundation, particularly his wrist position, body alignment and ability to stay behind the ball. “If the wrist position is correct, then turn is obtained.”

According to Hanuma Vihari, Suthar’s body movement also allows him to generate both drift and turn. The former India batter highlighted how the spinner moves towards the batter while maintaining his body behind the ball, giving him greater control over his trajectory.

Vihari also identified Suthar’s diagonal bowling action as one of his biggest strengths. The spinner stays close to the crease during his delivery stride, allowing his momentum and direction to remain aligned towards the stumps.

That approach has helped Suthar consistently attack the stumps, which has contributed to a significant number of his dismissals coming through LBW and bowled. His fluent action and ability to maintain pressure on batters make him a particularly promising prospect for Test cricket. “He will be one of the best bowlers in Test cricket in the future.”

Suthar will now look to build on his outstanding performance when ndia faces Sri Lanka in the second and decisive Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23. India currently leads the series 1-0, with crucial World Test Championship points at stake. The Indian team management could also face a selection call between Kuldeep Yadav and uncapped off-spinner Saransh Jain.

Kuldeep featured in the opening Test but had a limited impact, while Jain offers additional batting depth alongside his steady off-spin. Jain averages more than 30 in first-class cricket, potentially giving India another option when balancing the XI. However, after Suthar’s match-winning performance in Galle, the young left-arm spinner appears certain to remain a key part of India’s plans for the Colombo Test.
