England began their post-Bazball era in emphatic fashion, defeating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first Test at Headingley on Friday, August 21. The hosts dominated with both bat and ball, exposing Pakistan’s batting weaknesses and taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Pakistan’s second innings proved decisive as they were bowled out for just 135 after reaching 51/2. A collapse of four wickets for 25 runs effectively ended their hopes of saving the Test.

Their first-innings total of 171 had already left them under significant pressure against a disciplined England bowling attack. Josh Tongue was the standout performer for England, finishing the match with impressive figures of 8/89. Ollie Robinson also played a key role, claiming eight wickets for 80 runs across Pakistan’s two innings.

Salman Ali Agha, leading Pakistan in the absence of the injured Babar Azam, admitted after the match that England had been the better team. He acknowledged that Pakistan made too many mistakes, particularly with the bat. “England has outplayed us, and it is fair to say. We have made many mistakes.”

Agha also pointed to Pakistan’s inexperience in English conditions and admitted that their bowlers failed to make the most of the moisture available early in the match.

Despite the heavy defeat, the Pakistan captain remained confident about his team’s ability to bounce back. He praised Ali Usman for his bowling effort and highlighted Abdullah Shafique’s contribution with the bat. “I still back them. We need to eradicate mistakes and come back stronger in the next match.”

Salman Agha also remains hopeful that Babar Azam will recover in time for the second Test. The former Pakistan captain’s return could provide much-needed stability to a batting lineup that struggled badly at Headingley. Pakistan will now turn its attention to the second Test at Lord’s, which begins on Thursday, August 28.

The visitors face a major challenge against an England side that has started its new era with a commanding victory. Pakistan has not won a Test series in England for almost three decades, and the Headingley defeat highlighted just how difficult that record will be to change. With the series still open, Pakistan must quickly address its batting errors and produce a much-improved performance at Lord’s.
