India head coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed that he remains in regular contact with men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar as the team management works on plans for the future of Indian cricket. Speaking ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Saturday, August 22, Gambhir said their discussions are focused on making the right decisions for the overall development of the game.

Gautam Gambhir, however, chose not to disclose specific details of his conversations with Agarkar. He indicated that the discussions involve India’s long-term plans, team selection and the steps required to strengthen the side across formats. “It’s only about how we want to move forward within cricket.”

The Gambhir-Agarkar partnership has become increasingly important as India prepare for several major challenges. The team is looking to build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, maintain its progress in T20I cricket and improve its performances in the World Test Championship cycle.

The duo have already been involved in several important decisions, including discussions surrounding Shreyas Iyer’s T20I captaincy and Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI cricket. They will also have to plan Test squads for vastly different conditions, with upcoming assignments in New Zealand and India presenting contrasting challenges.

Gambhir admitted that injuries have complicated India’s planning throughout the year. Several key players have spent considerable time at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru while recovering from different fitness issues. “Even in this series, we have been missing so many players.”

The India head coach stressed that having the best players available consistently is crucial for building a settled team. According to Gambhir, continuity allows the management to develop players within clearly defined roles while giving the side a stronger chance of performing across formats. “We want our best players to play as much cricket as possible.”

India have also entered the second Test against Sri Lanka with several selection questions still to resolve. Kuldeep Yadav’s place, the possible inclusion of uncapped off-spinner Saransh Jain, and the management of the bowling attack have all attracted attention ahead of the Colombo Test.

For Gambhir and Agarkar, the immediate priority remains winning the second Test and completing a series sweep. Beyond Colombo, however, their coordination will be vital as India attempts to balance player workload, manage injuries and build a strong core for the next generation of international cricket.
