Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi endured a brief outing with the bat on Sunday as East Zone faced North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The 15-year-old, who has been named East Zone’s vice-captain, was dismissed for just eight runs from six deliveries.

North East Zone opted to bowl first, with Sooryavanshi opening alongside experienced batter Abhimanyu Easwaran. The youngster immediately showcased his aggressive approach against right-arm pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam.

Sooryavanshi struck the first delivery he faced through mid-wicket for a boundary before following it up with another impressive shot through the covers. However, Konthoujam quickly changed his approach and tightened his line.

The next delivery was pitched around the fourth-stump line, leaving Sooryavanshi with little room to work with. The teenager attempted another attacking shot through point but sliced the ball towards gully, where the fielder completed a comfortable catch.

His highly anticipated red-ball outing therefore lasted only six balls. The dismissal quickly sparked debate among fans, with many pointing out the difference between Sooryavanshi’s explosive white-ball style and the patience required in first-class cricket.

The Duleep Trophy campaign provides the young batter with valuable exposure to the longer format as he continues to develop his game across different conditions.

Sooryavanshi’s next major assignment is expected to come at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. The men’s cricket competition begins on September 24, with defending champions India entering directly at the quarter-final stage.

The teenager recently impressed during his maiden T20I series in Zimbabwe, earning Player of the Series honours after scoring consecutive half-centuries. He also became the first male player under 16 to register multiple international T20I fifties. With several senior Indian players expected to be rested during the Asian Games, Sooryavanshi could receive another opportunity to open the batting as India look to defend their gold medal.
