England fast bowler Brydon Carse is reportedly under investigation after an incident at a nightclub in Derby on Saturday night, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirming that it is looking into the matter. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Carse being led away from a nightclub in handcuffs by four police officers. The 31-year-old was reportedly accompanied by England and Durham teammate Matthew Potts at the venue.
The ECB issued a brief statement on Sunday, acknowledging the reported incident but providing no further details about what happened. “We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating,” the ECB said. “We will provide a further update when possible.”
Carse and Potts had both represented Durham in their County Championship clash against Derbyshire earlier in the day. Durham secured a commanding 338-run victory in the second-division fixture in Derby before the reported nightclub incident took place.

The development comes at an important time for Carse, who remains part of England’s squad for the ongoing Test series against Pakistan. He was England’s standout bowler during the disappointing 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia in 2025/26, finishing the series with 22 wickets. However, Carse was not selected for the opening Test against Pakistan at Headingley, where England registered a dominant innings-and-103-run victory inside three days. The second Test is scheduled to begin at Lord’s on Thursday, August 28.
The latest incident also comes amid renewed discussion surrounding discipline within the England Test setup. Joe Root, who recently returned as England’s permanent Test captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement, had previously confirmed that there would be no team curfew.

A curfew had been introduced earlier in the year following several late-night incidents during England’s tours of New Zealand and Australia. White-ball captain Harry Brook was involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington, while former Test captain Stokes and Gus Atkinson were later involved in another controversy at a London nightclub.
Root, however, explained that he did not believe imposing a curfew was the right approach. He said players should be trusted to behave responsibly away from the cricket field and understand the consequences of their decisions. Carse’s latest setback comes after an injury-hit start to 2026. The fast bowler has not represented England since the conclusion of the Ashes, with a hand injury also forcing him to miss the Indian Premier League.

The incident could now create another unwanted distraction for Carse and England ahead of the Lord’s Test. Carse has played 14 Tests, 30 ODIs and 14 T20Is for England. He also served a three-month ban in 2024 after accepting charges relating to 303 bets placed on cricket matches between 2017 and 2019. None of those bets involved matches in which he was playing.
