Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat opened up on the performances in the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka at Colombo. He said this is a sign that Virat Kohli has passed the captaincy baton to Shubman Gill. Sarfaraz Khan, standing at short leg, was consistently commenting towards the Sri Lankan batters, while Mohammed Siraj also went at Kamil Mishara verbally earlier on Day 3 as well. Earlier in the Test match, Yashasvi Jaiswal also got into a physical altercation with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando as well.

Talking about the transition from Virat Kohli to Shubman Gill in that aspect on the Sony Sports Network, KS Bharat said, “In the field, all the short leg fielders are very vocal. That was seen when Virat was leading the side. He was making them express themselves. And the baton has been clearly passed from Virat to Shubman. You could see Sarfaraz Khan and Siraj chirpy to the batter.”

KS Bharat also believes nerves got the better of debutant Saransh Jain on Day 3 of the second Test against Sri Lanka. He also
bowled 18 wicketless overs, conceding 51 runs on Day 3 as well. However, he has bounced back in style, picking the final two wickets of the Sri Lankan innings early on the fourth day to finish with figures of 2/69 as well.

“Saransh Jain looked a little bit nervous to start. Then he settled down and started to spin the ball, while using the side crease well. Shubman is a very brave captain. He backs his players, and so he’ll back Saransh Jain as well. India needs six or seven wins to qualify for the WTC final. And they are in search of an off-spinner. So Saransh Jain will get a bigger role in the Test matches to come. So he should just relax and trust his captain and his teammates that they are there to take care of him,” concluded KS Bharat.
