Team India and East Zone opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi cheekily said that his captain, Ishan Kishan, assumed that the decision to give him the ball was a risk in the 2026 Duleep Trophy quarterfinal clash against North East Zone as well. However, Suryavanshi shone after failing to do well with the bat for his side. His side scored 356 runs lead in the first innings after bowling North East Zone for 111.
As a result, Kishan enforced the follow-on and North East Zone moved to 72/5 in 25 overs in their second innings. Suryavanshi came to bowl in the 26th over and gave away only two runs in his first over, before striking twice in his next over, dismissing the well-set Kishan Lyngdoh on 25, followed by Imliwati Lemtur for four as well.
Talking about his bowling performance, Suryavanshi said (via the BCCI Domestic X handle): “If you ask batters, they always enjoy bowling. A batter bowling or a bowler batting is enjoyable for the player. Wickets weren’t falling for the opposing team. Thus, I was asked to bowl two or three overs. Ishan bhaiya felt like he was taking a risk by giving me the ball. But he doesn’t know that I am a wicket-taker.”

Vaibhav Suryavanshi also believes his bowling spell was likely to be limited to two to three overs, irrespective of his performance in the 2026 Duleep Trophy quarterfinal against North East Zone as well.
“In my mind, I only thought that even if I take five wickets, I am only getting three overs to bowl. I tried to bowl as best as I could, in one spot, and to finish my spell. It was a lot of fun because batting didn’t go so well in the last match, so contributing to the team with the ball was fun. When a batter takes a wicket, there is no greater enjoyment than that,” concluded Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
